In Washington the U.S. Senate is on the road toward creating a sneaky
version of the same Unaffordable Care Act that slithered out of the House of
Representatives last month.
Would you be surprised if I said
that politicians lie? After the big boys told everyone that the despicably
cruel health insurance bill the House passed on May 4 would be no-way
acceptable to the Senate - Guess what? They're hiding in closets working
on THING 2
As the New York Times said,
taking health insurance from poor and middle class families and turning the
savings over to the rich is a lot like farming mold. It grows best in
the dark.
Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader, has clamped a
lid of secrecy on what his boys are doing, and he's threatened dire
consequences if there are leaks. He will have no public hearings on this new
monstrosity. He left the door open only a teensy-weensy crack by setting up a
special email address where "select people" could put in their two
cents (probably more like $2 million), but by the time the news media found out
about it, the email period was over. That's the old shell game: Now you see it,
now you don't.
You can't use that email anymore,
but if you want to give 'em hell, you can use the email addresses of our two
Pennsylvania senators. Bob Casey is a Democrat and will vote against all this
chicanery. Senator Pat Toomey is on the Republican side, a millionaire three
times over like most of the senators. You can give him a quick Twitter:
@SenToomey. Tell him about your mother who has cancer; tell him about your
sister who has diabetes; tell him about your 10-year-old niece who has juvenile
arthritis. Beg. Plead. Make him feel ashamed, when he's so rich, to be
taking away the insurance of 23 million people who are not rich (51 million
men, women and children by 2026 if this abomination becomes law, according to
an analysis by the honest and non-partisan Congressional Budget Office).
The Republican Senate, like the
Republican House, doesn't want hearings on the Baby Frankenstein it's creating.
By contrast, when Obamacare was making its way through Congress
between 2008 and 2010, in the Senate alone during those years it faced up to
everyone's questions and testimony during 44 hearings and public events.
If the Senate monstrosity looks
anything like the House bill and takes away health insurance from millions of
people, the 46 Senate Democrats, including Bob Casey will vote against it,
along with at least two Independents, one of whom - again - is Bernie
Sanders.
It will take only three Republican
heroes to stand up with them, possibly from among these good people:
· Lamar Alexander: Twitter?
@SenAlexander - Email? Google Lamar
Alexander and use his email contact form.
· Shelley Moore Capito: Twitter? @SenCapito - Email?
Google Senator Shelley Capito and use her email contact form.
· Dr. Bill Cassidy: Email? Google Senator Bill
Cassidy, scroll down to the word "CONTACT," see the question,
"How Can I Help You?" and tell him not to vote yes.
· Susan Collins: Twitter? @SenatorCollins - Email?
Google Senator Susan Collins and click Contact Senator Susan Collins.
· Dean Heller: Twitter? @SenDeanHeller - Email?
Google Senator Dean Heller and click Email Me.
· Lisa Murkowski: Twitter? @lisamurkowski - Google
Senator Lisa Murkowski and click Contact Lisa.
· Rob Portman: Twitter? @senrobportman - Email?
Google Senator Rob Portman and click Contact Rob.
Think of your brothers and sisters, your father, your mother, and your
Uncle Joe. Think of all those you don't know, all those 23 million this year
who are people as real as we are. Email these senators. Urge them to cross the
aisle on this grave issue. Tell them about the Golden Rule. Do unto
others as you would have done to you.
